From Via del Sale to the Riviera dei Fiori

From the Gothic façade of the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Limone Piemonte to the sun-drenched alleyways of Sanremo, this cycle tour of almost 100 kilometres is undoubtedly one of the most contemplative (but just as sporty) in the RivierALP network. The Via del Sale, a former military road dating back to the 1930s, opens the trail at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. It’s a great way to get into the swing of things, between lunar landscapes and the larch trees of the Bosco delle Navette, before the final descent to the beaches of Sanremo. A cycle tourism route for connoisseurs… and for those who want to become one!

Cycling from Limone Piemonte Col de Tende to Sanremo: a cycle route between two worlds

This is one of the largest cycle routes in the RivierALP network, and there’s something special about it. The route, adapted for mountain bikes, is designed for performance… but above all for contemplation. It’s impossible to keep your head in the handlebars, the scenery is so eye-catching! Starting with the Haute Route du Sel. Between the small lakes at altitude and the panoramic views, it’s all about keeping your eyes open!

From Margaria Loxe (1,850 metres), a strategic crossroads in the RivierALP network, the cyclo-tourists who choose Sanremo head south-west, towards the Tanarello pass, the Bassa di Sanson and its remains of fortifications. And where next? Lake Tenarda, the church of San Giovanni dei Prati and the mysterious medieval village of Bajardo. Not forgetting, of course, the 100% adrenalin-fuelled descent from Monte Bignone to Sanremo’s seafront cycle path. Two worlds in one itinerary: the Alps and the Mediterranean, less than 100 kilometres apart.

The cycling itinerary can be divided into two or three stages, depending on your level and pace. At Colle di Tenda, you can spend the night in a refuge near Monte Saccarello before the second stage at Colla Melosa. From the Allavena refuge, you can head for Sanremo for the final stretch of this route.

Cultural heritage to see

From the Gothic church of Limone to the ruins of Bajardo

This cycle tour is all about cardio, but it’s not all about culture either. It all starts in Limone Piemonte, where the façade of the church of San Pietro in Vincoli and its 11th-century Romanesque bell tower form the symbolic starting point of the trail. And it has to be said that the 16th-century carved chiusa is well worth a stop before getting on your bike.

History buffs among you? Along the Via del Sale, you’ll be amazed by the military structures dating from the 1930s. Not far away, the Allavena refuge at Colla Melosa (CAI Bordighera) is itself a monument to the history of cycle tourism in the heart of the Ligurian mountains.

Get back in the saddle! The jewel in the crown of this itinerary, Bajardo, is sure to charm you. And how could you fail to fall in love with this medieval village steeped in Celtic myths and legends? With its famous Chiesa Vecchia di San Niccolò and Roman columns, the place becomes a veritable open-air theatre.

The Allavena refuge at Colla Melosa: the crossroads for cycle hikers

On the road between the Col de Tende and Sanremo, the CAI F. Allavena refuge at Colla Melosa (1,545 metres) is a must. And not just for the night. Run since time immemorial by the Bordighera section of the Italian Alpine Club, this hut was founded in 1947 and over the decades has become the headquarters for cycling explorers in the heart of the Ligurian Alps. Its location is ideal: easily accessible by car, just a few kilometres from the French border and at the crossroads of the Roya, Nervia and Argentina valleys.

For cyclists and bikepackers, the refuge has all the necessary bike accessories. These include a garage with a workshop equipped for repairs* and a recharging point for electric mountain bikes. An invaluable asset for cyclists on the road. The refuge is also an excellentobservationpointfor the park’s wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for roe deer, stags, chamois and even wolves playing hide and seek in the surrounding area. A stopover that makes you want to stay longer!

Testimonial

“I’ve been doing cyclo randos for years, and I have to say there’s something different about this one. You set off from Limone in the Ligurian Alps, climb the Via del Sale and feel like you’re exploring an open-air military museum, and then the landscape gradually changes. The Bosco delle Navette, the remains of the fortifications, the village of Bajardo and its church overlooking the sky… every hour brings something new. The descent from Monte Bignone towards Sanremo is physically demanding but visually unforgettable. The Ligurian Sea is just around the corner, and you realise you’ve crossed the Alps by bike. The Sanremo seafront, after 4,000 metres of descent, is a real reward!
