The Alpes Maritimes is unlike any other region in France. In the space of just a few dozen kilometres, the area stretches from the snow-capped peaks of Piedmont to the coves of the Ligurian Sea. From wild gorges to sun-drenched cliffs. As you can see, it’s the ideal playground for lovers of outdoor activities. Raft down a river in the morning, climb the via ferrata in the afternoon and finish the day with a kayaking session. At RivierALP, you’re spoilt for choice!

Climbing, sliding: outdoor activities at altitude

Whether on the Italian Piedmont side or the French side, the Alpes Maritimes offers lovers of outdoor activities a remarkable catalogue of ideas. That’s right! The limestone cliffs of the Marguareis and Mercantour attract climbers from the four corners of Europe, while the Alpine ridges at the back of the region are the ideal meeting points for paragliders. And, as a bonus, there’s a breathtaking view of the Ligurian Sea. In winter, the resorts of Limone Piemonte and Prato Nevoso transform these same peaks into fully-equipped ski areas, accessible from Turin or Nice. For those who love thrills, head for the via ferrata in the Roya gorges or the Argentera foothills for a high-flying experience. Thrills guaranteed.

Paddling, diving: outdoor activities on the water

From the gorges of the Haute Roya to the coves of the Riviera dei Fiori, RivierALP boasts some of the most unique water spots in Europe. At altitude, the white waters of the Roya, Stura and Pesio valleys are home to some of the most popular canyoning and rafting courses in the Southern Alps. As you head down to the coast, sea kayaking takes over, between the azure coves of Sanremo and Imperia. Further out to sea, sailing is the most emblematic outdoor activity on the Italian Riviera. And to activate the slow mode, opt for rowing or river fishing. There’s plenty to get you into the water for a real adventure!

Walking, cycling... exploring: outdoor activities in the great outdoors

In the Alpes Maritimes, walking and cycling are the order of the day! For several hundred kilometres, RivierALP links the peaks of the Piedmont with the beaches of the Liguria, passing through some exceptional nature parks. Starting with the Mercantour on the French side and the Marguareis on the Italian side. For hikers, the network’s flagship routes (Limone Piemonte – Menton / Roccaforte – refuge Don Barbera / Terme di Valdieri – Castérino) offer several days’ worth of crossings through unspoilt countryside. For cyclists, the 30-kilometre Via del Sale, at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, is one of the most spectacular cycle tours in the Southern Alps. And for nature lovers, the Mercantour’s fauna has more than enough to surprise you. Keep your eyes peeled! Wolves, chamois, bearded vultures and golden eagles accompany your ride.
