Cycle tourism between the Alps and the Mediterranean The flagship cycling route between Italy and France

This route takes you on a unique adventure between the Alps and the Mediterranean. In just over 120 kilometres, you’ll go from the peaks of the Italian Piedmont to the palm trees of Menton, crossing Alpine passes, military tracks, hilltop villages and the wild valleys of the Maritime Alps. It’s like cycling from the Alps to the sea, with the Côte d’Azur as your final reward.

Designed for touring cyclists, gravel riders and mountain bikers, the route alternates between dirt tracks, panoramic roads and more technical sections classified S3, in the heart of the Roya and Bévéra landscapes. From the Col de Tende to Sospel, via Tende, La Brigue and Saorge, each stage combines adventure, heritage and wide open spaces.

And then there’s that incredible moment when the Mediterranean finally comes into view from the heights of the Col de Braus. After several days in the Southern Alps, the descent to Menton, between the Mediterranean light and the seafront, gives this cross-border crossing a real taste of escape.

Heritage, villages and landscapes of the Alpes maritimes

From the military forts of the Col de Tende to the narrow streets of Menton

This cycle route between the Col de Tende and Menton passes through some of the most beautiful villages in the Maritime Alps, following ancient military and trade routes steeped in history. From the Col de Tende onwards, the forts perched at an altitude of over 1,800 metres are a reminder of the strategic importance of this passageway between Italy and France. These military structures still dominate the former tracks of the Route du Sel, now used by gravel, mountain bike and cycle-touring enthusiasts.

The descent into the Roya valley then reveals a succession of hilltop villages with a unique character. Tende, with its narrow streets and colourful houses, or La Brigue, which is well worth a stop to discover Notre-Dame des Fontaines, nicknamed the “Sistine Chapel of the Alpes-Maritimes”. The route then takes you to Saorge, famous for its Baroque Franciscan monastery overlooking the entire valley.

After Breil-sur-Roya and its lake, the route reaches Sospel, one of the great heritage highlights of this crossing of the Southern Alps. Its fortified medieval bridge and the baroque façade of the church of Saint-Michel bear witness to the valley’s rich commercial past. Then comes Castellar, the last perched village before the sea, set against the hills overlooking Menton and the Côte d’Azur.

Arriving in Menton offers a striking contrast after several days spent in the mountains. The Alpine slopes give way to palm trees, colourful facades and the Mediterranean atmosphere of the seafront!

On your route

Nature and adventure by bike in the Southern Alps

This cycle route offers you a real adventure experience in the heart of the Maritime Alps, with its panoramic military tracks and technical trails classified as S3 (Singletrail Scale, demanding level with challenging sections). From the very first sections, you’ll be riding along old strategic roads on balconies, with views over the valleys and ridges on the border between Italy and France.

The route alternates constantly between dirt tracks, tarmac roads and more technical singletrack, giving it a real “playground” feel. Between Alpine passes, forests, hilltop villages and wilder stretches, each section offers a different atmosphere, always at the heart of the Southern Alps landscape.

Designed for bikepacking, gravelling and mountain biking enthusiasts, this route requires good effort and route management, particularly on the more physical sections. The use of an electrically-assisted (AE) bike can clearly make certain stages easier, without detracting from the pleasure of the adventure or the richness of the panoramas, particularly when the Mediterranean begins to appear in the distance.

Testimonial

“I set off on this route without really knowing what to expect, and as soon as I hit the first tracks around the Col de Tende, I realised that this wasn’t going to be a simple bike ride. The old military tracks, the perched forts and the views over the Maritime Alps immediately created a pretty incredible atmosphere.

What I liked most was the constant changeover: dirt tracks, quiet roads, more technical sections in the S3… there was never a dull moment. And then there are those moments when you’re riding on a balcony above the valleys, with the peaks on one side and sometimes a more Mediterranean light in the distance.

The section towards Sospel and especially the climb to the Col de Braus, that’s where it all comes together. And then, suddenly, the sea appears. Arriving in Menton after all that, between the palm trees and the seafront, really gives you the feeling that you’ve been through something great.”
