From the Alpes Maritimes to the Upper Tanaro Valley

Between thousand-year-old Romanesque frescoes and karstic mountain pastures, the hike from Roccaforte Mondovì to the Don Barbera refuge is one of the most unusual in the RivierALP network. In just two stages, the trail leaves the Occitan hamlets of the Ellero valley and rises to the immensity of the Porta di Pian Marchisio, before plunging into the serene mineral world of the Marguareis park. And at the end of the trail, the Don Barbera refuge (a must on the Haute Route du Sel) is a reward worthy of the effort. And that’s just the start of the adventure!

A high-altitude hike to the Don Barbera refuge A hike at the crossroads of the greatest itineraries

Two stages. Two days. And a mosaic of landscapes to discover! Departing from the charming village of Roccaforte Mondoví, this tour will show youNorthern Italy at its best. Before you start, don’t forget to take a look at the Romanesque-Byzantine frescoesin the church of Saint-Maurice. Between the Kiss of Judas, Christ Pantocrator and the Virgin attributed to Giovanni Mazzucco, these are probably the rarest works of art in Piedmont.

The second stage will take you up to the Occitan hamlets of the Ellero valley before plunging you into the peaceful karst world of the Marguareis. Two different atmospheres that blend perfectly together. And here’s some good news! The route intersects with major hiking trails, such as the Giro del Marguareis and theAlta Via del Sale. As you can see, this route is a strategic crossroads for hikers from all over the world.

Cultural heritage to see

Between Roman heritage and contemporary caving

From the Romanesque church of San Maurizio to the Roman flagstones of the Antica Via del Sale, via the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) refuge built in the 1920s and the caves of the Piagiabella complex, the hike from Roccaforte Mondovì to the Don Barbera refuge has a lot to offer heritage lovers. And with good reason! Between preserved frescoes, caving and historical treasures, the walk weaves a fascinating circuit between eras. A real journey through time awaits you!

The Don Barbera refuge, a must-see stopover in the Ligurian Alps

In the heart of the Marguareis, you only have to look up to Colle dei Signori to see the rifugio Don Barbera. At an altitude of over 2000 metres, this renovated stone structure is as minimalist as it is welcoming. The view of the Ligurian Alps from the bedrooms and kitchen is breathtaking.

“The simple things are the most extraordinary, and only the learned manage to see them”. It’s this quote from Paulo Coelho that springs to mind when we think of this refuge. But, with all due respect to the author of The Alchemist, you don’t need to be a scientist to understand that this accommodation is a real gem. Just a slightly contemplative hiker!

An essential stopover on the Giro del Marguareis, the Don Barbera refuge is much more than a simple mountain halt. Its position is quite simply strategic. Not surprising when you’re on the Haute Route du Sel, a legendary route linking the Piedmontese Alps to the Mediterranean.

Testimonial

“I wasn’t expecting so much in so few stages. You start off in an unassuming Piedmontese village, stop in front of Byzantine frescoes, and then the trail takes over. Occitan hamlets, the Roman flagstones of the Via del Sale, the immensity of Pian Marchisio… Every moment of the day brings something new. And when you arrive at the Don Barbera refuge, you soon realise why hikers have been stopping here for centuries.
