Description

Alpine loop between lakes, rock engravings and wild panoramas. From Castérino, explore the Valmasque and Fontanalbe valleys in the heart of the Mercantour National Park.
From the hamlet of Castérino, continue along the road for about 2.5 km toward the Valmasque Valley. The trailhead is located at the entrance signs to the Mercantour National Park (marker 394). Follow the marked trail leading to the Valmasque mountain hut, walking along the banks of the stream. From the hut, head due south to ascend the valley, passing by the three high-altitude lakes in succession. At marker 96, turn east toward the Fontanalba pass. Starting at marker 397, you’ll enter the protected archaeological site: you must stay on the marked trail or be accompanied by a certified guide to leave the area. Next, follow the rock art interpretive trail, passing in particular by the sacred path, before gradually descending back toward the refuge. Continue along the trail to marker 390, where you’ll head toward Castérino.
